4-H Chicken Club meets monthly with 4-H Leader Leah Fox and Leader/Master Gardener Trina Ehntholt to learn how to keep our chickens safe, happy and healthy. At the end of the program, youth have the opportunity to participate in the county poultry showcase around New Jersey and come home with ribbons for their hard work. Families are encouraged to sign up to care for the chickens in weekly timeslots.

This winter, the 4-H of Essex County Chicken Club Youth Members (grades 4-7) studied chicken anatomy and each member researched a different chicken to identify the various breeds in our flock. They observed characteristics of the anatomy and the temperament to determine each breed. The members then presented their research and gave their chickens a “farm name.” You can view the findings of their hard work here!
